Cyanotype history and how to

February 10th, 2024

Cyanotypes, also called sun prints, are one of the oldest photographic printing processes dating back to 1842. Sir John Herschel developed this first silver less photographic process using only 2 chemicals and the sun as a light source. These sun prints are decidedly low tech as the final image of a cyanotype appears only with the aid of sunlight as a light source and water for a developer. This inexpensive, simple and permanent process was used for the blue print process for copying architectural plans, hence the name
“Blue print.” The very first book of printed text and photographs by Anna Atkin used the Cyanotype process.

This process involves two stock solutions that are mixed together and coated on watercolor paper. After the paper dries, a large negative is placed over the paper and placed in the sun or a UV light source, anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the day, time of year, cloud cover and density of the negative. The cyanotype print is washed in plain tap water and dried in the air. Unlike traditional prints, the texture of the watercolor paper adds interesting tonal qualities and creative dimensions to the printing process. Many 19th century processes, like Cyanotypes are making a comeback with the fine art photographers. You can see modern versions of this antique process in many art exhibits and museums around the country. This current revival of alternative processes is more than a trend. I think the attraction for these old processes is the physical involvement during the printing processes, allowing photographers to use our hands, eyes and intuition when printing. This hands on technique is much more satisfying than simply pressing a print key on a computer.
Many photographers limit themselves to digital technology, but I find it exciting to combine digital methods with photographic processes from the distant past. You can either take photos using a large format camera or make contact prints using your digital images and converting the image to a negative using Photoshop and printing them out on transparent film using an inject printer.

I am fascinated by both the simplicity and the alchemy of the Cyanotype process. This old process has changed the way I take photos. While composing a photo, I am also considering which printing technique best suits the image. My subjects are the oddities of roadside Americana and the crumbling graves of persons long gone. You may find me lurking about cemeteries in my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. I an enamored of the brush strokes so typical of cyanotypes and the moody blue color intensify the sense of loss in my cemetery images.

Some of my cyanotypes sold on FAA to a designer. The images ended up in a hospital near my home. I am grateful to Arch Designs for using local St. Louis artists for their projects. It is this kind of support that means so much to artists. Plus they wrote a nice little blurb about my art on their web page:

About the Artwork

Framed prints from local artist and photographer Jane Linders beautifully complement the modern interior at BJC Outpatient Center at Ellisville.

Unique stylized prints from Linders’ wet cyanotype botanical series involve a fascinating process to create each image.

Cyanotype, also known as sun printing, is the photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print through an interaction between special chemicals and the sun.

Jane Linders employs a variation of this technique called wet cyanotype, where she undercoats the paper with additional chemicals or substances to alter the results.

Jane says she enjoys the physical involvement during the printing process, which allows her to use her hands, eyes, and intuition when creating the pieces.

She undercoats each piece of paper with watercolor and sprinkles them with turmeric to create bursts of yellow coloring. She then places cuttings from plants found locally, covers them with soap bubbles and plastic wrap, and exposes them to the sun to create extraordinary results.

These wet cyanotype botanical prints by Jane Linders combine artistry and chemistry and offer a unique take on local plant life at this state-of-the-art clinic.

About the Artist

St. Louis-based artist and photographer Jane Linders has been practicing chemistry for the last fifteen years while taking an interest in infrared photography. After experimenting with black and white infrared film for five years, Linders began exploring alternative photographic processes.

Jane currently specializes in alternative process photography such as black and white infrared, polaroid transfers, emulsion lifts, and cyanotypes. Reflecting on her creative process, Jane states that “the depth of the tactile experience and the imposed slowness reveals moods and nuances in my images that I wouldn’t normally see.”

Juror, Robin Hirsch-Steinhoff's statement:

"I created “Hope” as our first virtual exhibit of 2021 as an act of pure optimism. Optimism that the world and its inhabitants would be in a better place in the new year. Yes… I realize that every new year brings us a renewed sense of hope, but as I’m sure you’ll agree—2021 is different.

As we closed out 2020, there seemed to be a resounding sense that 2021 could begin to heal humanity and the world at-large. As the new year approached, I felt a rising energy from the regional art community—artists seemed especially driven to express that surge of hope in their works, suggesting that a more positive future was well within their grasp. Or maybe I’m just projecting. But then again, when we look at art don’t we often project our own experiences into what is presented before us, interpreting that artwork through our own lenses?

For the “Hope” exhibit, we asked regional artists to submit artworks that consider, interpret or depict the idea of hope and how it applies to the events of 2020 as well as how it affects them in the new year. For jurying, 69 artists submitted 154 original artworks specifically created in 2020 or 2021 for my consideration from which I selected works by 48 artists from Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky for the show. This exhibit features 48 works in ceramics, collage, digital art, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, and textiles.

The artworks that I selected for the show address many responses to and interpretations and depictions of what hope means, including imagery about birth as well as rebirth—in nature, spiritualism, faith, parenthood, family. There are also works that depict a new day and images that present a clear path away from the viewer and, at least in my interpretation, toward the future. There are artworks that celebrate the family bond as well as what friendship means. And there are artworks that address the hope for concrete, lasting change. I hope that you will enjoy this exhibit and find expressions that speak strongly to you.

Thank you to everyone who submitted artwork for my consideration for this show and to the 48 artists whose works are featured here. It is my life’s work to celebrate the work of our region’s talented artists and I am honored to present these works to you in this special exhibit."

About Juried Exhibits

Jurors: Amy Wilson and Sarah Merideth founded Framations Custom Framing business in 2005 and opened their brick and mortar shop with the addition of the art gallery in 2006. Before their 14+ years of Gallery ownership, exhibit management and 40+ combined years of framing experience: Amy's background includes decades of management experience in photo labs with both film and digital media, home decor, and custom framing. Sarah's background includes a BA in art with experience in working in and critiquing multimedia work, and several years of management and framing experience.

Over the years, the owners of Framations have been asked repeatedly what a juror is looking for and more often why particular pieces were not chosen to be part of an exhibit. As part a nod to the 15th annual exhibit and also an experiment in critique and appreciation to the artists exhibiting with Framations, the owners have to decide to co-jury Beyond the Lens XV.

The owners are offering this exhibit as a critique process for artists. Each piece entered will have at least a brief comment provided from the jurors in regards to either why it was accepted, why it was declined, or some other constructive criticism intended to encourage and improve the artist’s craft. As we all know, there is a level of subjectivity in any sort of judgement, but the elements of art as well as technique. craftsmanship and presentation will be a focus.

Artist statement:

I used infrared technology to capture this serene Buddha statue located in Big Sur California. This image is perfect for your home, office, yoga studio or mediation room.

This image is one of my Feng Shui series. The presence of this image in a home or business environment creates a sense of focus. While much household ornamentation can be appreciated for its aesthetics, in feng shui the primary purpose has been to solicit good fortune for it's inhabitants. Our surroundings project onto our moods and spirits. The things we look at, even if just a glimpse, effect our subconscious. We can accomplish harmony by using art which is first of all aesthetic ,but also functional to create a sense of ease and good fortune in our everyday lives.

Cyanotypes featured in Ladue News Art And Soul

Cyanotypes featured in Ladue News Art And Soul

I am very honored to be the featured artist in Ladue News Art and Soul section. They are featuring my wet cyanotype series and a little blurb about how I coped as an artist during the pandemic. I appreciate the support!

Staying busy is my go-to coping strategy and printing using the wet cyanotype method kept me distracted during this troubling pandemic. Cyanotypes, also called “sun prints” are one of the oldest photographic printing processes dating back to 1842. Sir John Herschel developed this first silver less photographic process using only two chemicals and the sun as a light source. These sun prints are decidedly low tech as the final image of a cyanotoype appears only with the aid of sunlight as a light source and water for a developer. This inexpensive, simple and permanent process was used for the blue print process for copying architectural plans, hence the name “Blueprint” as the images are a deep Prussian blue color. The very first book of printed text and photographs by Anna Atkin used the cyanotype process. My attraction to the cyanotype process is the physical involvement during the printing process allowing me to use my hand, eyes and intuition. I like the way the light, time, salts and myself slowly deposit an image on beautifully hand crafted paper.
My backyard garden represented a constant coming and going of the seasons and were a source of comfort and joy in the ever changing world. As plants popped up here and there, it was a reminder to slow down and remember that everything has its own time. I marked the passing of the seasons by printing cyanotypes directly from plants found in my suburban back yard. The varieties of leaves and weather produces variable results. These prints were made during the sultry St. Louis summer days. I tossed the spice turmeric on the prints for splash of yellow color and to mimic the flash of lightening of quick thunderstorms that so often interrupted my printing process and the fireflies that lit up the summer night skies.

Many 19th century processes, like cyanotypes, are making a comeback with fine art photographers. You can see modern versions of this antique process in many art exhibits and museums around the country. The current revival of alternative process is more than a trend and I find the hands on technique much more satisfying than simply pressing a print key on a computer.

David Ottinger

In a speech from the spring of 2016, I tried to sum up the essence of what I feel every artist tries to accomplish. I stated, “Only that which redefines the definition of the word has any chance to become that which it pretends to define.”

It is certainly no simple task to change the definition of a word. However, every great artist throughout history has done just that. Jackson Pollack, Camille Pissarro and Leonardo Da Vinci changed the definition of painting. Donatello (Donato di Nicocolò di Betto Bardi) and Donald Judd and Kara Walker changed the definition of sculpture. David Octavius Hill and Edward Stieglitz and Cindy Sherman changed photography.

As a student I was enthralled with two topics, art and psychology. At times I try to bring the two together in the same conversation. Though I taught Figure Drawing, Painting and Art History for decades, I am still enchanted with the idea of bringing psychology and painting together in a way that tries to define the moment when an individual makes a decision or comes to a realization about a dilemma or idea.

It is the search for that indefinable idea that intrigues me the most and of course, is the most elusive.

Jane Linders

Jane Linders is an award winning photographer whose prints are in numerous national and international collections. Linders has exhibited her work everywhere from her home town in St. Louis to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. She is a tireless imagemaker who mines the oddities of roadside America.

After several years of traditional photography, I began to experiment with infrared photography because I enjoy the otherworldly quality of the image. My photos are not an in-your-face kind of intensity, but a gentle, matter of fact, I am here and I have always been here kind of statement, that builds the more your look at my image. Infrared photography broadened my photographic notions and expanded my creativity. I like how beautifully infrared light is reflected and absorbed by different surfaces. This non traditional photography allowed me to capture traditional subjects in a novel and interesting way. My major influence is the work of William Eggleston, who creates art from commonplace subjects and finds beauty in the banal and mundane.

Christine Ilewski

Christine Ilewski lives in Alton, IL. She received her BFA from the Univ. of WI-Eau Claire, did masters work at Lindenwood Univ. and SIUE where she completed K-12 teaching certification. She taught in the U-City school district. She has been the Visting Artist for Liquitex for 20 years, bringing a materials and methods workshop to university campuses around the midwest.

Her studio work is primarily acrylic with multiple mixed media elements. She describes her current work: “My work has always been “personal.” My work has reflected my experience as a woman, a mother, a wife, a sister, a daughter; a domestic, intimate life. Landscape has almost always been the background to my narratives, but in my most recent work it seems to have become my center…a place of reflection, a still point from which everything else revolves. These landscapes are bubbling up from a subconscious stream, a “river” of relationships. With a studio overlooking the Mississippi, the mighty river runs through all my work. “

She is also the founder/director of the nonprofit Faces Not Forgotten (www.facesnotforgotten.com) , a memorial project of portaits of young gun violence victims. Christine was awarded the 2013 Critical Mass Stimulus Grant for this project and has exhibited the project throughout St. Louis and the campuses of UMSL, Rutgers, Northeastern and Blackburn universities. BBC America did a piece on FNF in 2017.

Her studio work can be seen in the IL state Artisan shops, the Museum of Contemporary Art, New Harmony, Ariodante Gallery NOLA and many private collections. www.ilewski.com 618-806-6747

Exhibit my infrared landscape photography in a library? Why not? I was returning some books to the local library when I noticed an empty case in the lobby of the library, so I inquired about exhibiting. The librarian said that someone cancelled at the last minute and she offered to let me exhibit my photos. Although it isn't a prestigious gallery space, I had nothing going on, so I immediately went home and gathered some infrared landscapes suitable for the exhibit space. While I was arranging the exhibit at least 5 people wandered by and inquired about the photos and my process. The way I figure it, nobody is going to see my photos framed and sitting in a box down my basement.

Hygge, the Nordic art of coziness.

January 23rd, 2018

Hygge, the Nordic art of coziness.

Hygge (pronounced "HOO-gah") is the Nordic art of coziness. The concept is from Denmark and involves comfort food, hot drinks, real fire places, warm blankets, traditions, candles and fluffy pillows. Long before I knew there was a word for this concept, I have been practicing hygge with my family for years. Our tradition is called "First Fire". When the first cold snap of autumn brings frost to the leaves, our family gathers around the hearth, we light a blazing fire and hunker down with warm blankets, popcorn and beer to watch a movie. "First Fire" kicks off our couch potato season for the winter of snugly movie nights. Our living room is small and cozy and the warmth from the fireplace can almost drive you out of the room. The Danes have known of hygge for years and are known to be one of the happiest people on the planet. They rank in one of the top slots, year after year in the World Happiness Report. Perhaps they are on to something? The notion of slowing down and reflecting in the winter months and achieving a life balance can lead you down the path to happiness. There are many books on the subject, "The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living" by Meik Wiking is a good start.

Photography Prints

Certainly the decor of a room can enhance hygge. Cozy pillows, farmhouse chic and warm earth tones can help you create an inviting environment. Simply changing your couch pillows and throw rugs along with putting out a few candles is an inexpensive way to achieve that hygge. Go ahead and snuggle in for the winter.

St. Louis, Missouri, September 14, 2017 - Today, the St. Louis Landmarks Association announces a new exhibition entitled “Empty Halls, Silent Classrooms”. The exhibition opens with a reception Wednesday, September 20, 2017, 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm. The evening will include a brief presentation by Walker Gaffney the Director of Real Estate at the St. Louis Public Schools and photographers. Light refreshments will be served. The location is the Landmarks Association of St. Louis, 911 Washington Avenue, Suite 101, 63101. The exhibition continues through Monday February 26, 2018.

About the Exhibition
An expanded version of ”Empty Halls, Silent Classrooms”, this exhibition features 50 additional photographs by 14 photographers. The photographers are donating 25% of their proceeds directly to the Landmarks Association.

In 2015 the St. Louis Public School district held tours of 30 schools that had been closed due to declining enrollment. The goal was to find new owners who would redevelop and reuse them. The St. Louis Public Schools Building Revitalization Collaborative is marketing the schools to educators, community groups and developers. Several schools have been successfully converted to market-rate housing, some have been sold to churches and business, but many continue to stand vacant and waiting for new school spirit.

Community leaders, politicians, church leaders, developers, teachers, alumni, neighbors and photographers explored interesting classrooms, offices, libraries, gymnasiums, theaters, swimming pools and boiler rooms. The schools were exquisitely designed by renowned architects and built by master craftsmen to last using fine materials. The photographs document elaborate architectural features and the stunning chaos of peeling paint, collapsed ceilings, falling plaster, and broken glass.

About the Landmarks Association
Landmarks Association of St. Louis, Inc. is a public, not-for-profit organization. Incorporated in
1959, its mission is to preserve, enhance, and promote St. Louis’ architectural heritage and to encourage sound planning and good contemporary design.

Empty Halls, Silent Classrooms

In the spring of 2015 the St. Louis Public School district scheduled public open house of over 30 closed schools that had fallen into disrepair in the hopes that the schools could be redeveloped and re-purposed. Local photographers descended upon the neglected, century old schools and spent a glorious spring photographing the beautiful chaos of cracked walls, peeling paint, mold, glass shards and dead animals. It is against this abandoned backdrop that eight photographers explored empty buildings and captured the emotive power of shuttered schools. The schools were looted, vandalized, thieves removed copper wiring and the freeze thaw cycle left many schools devastated.

. The architectural grandeur of turn of the century schools in ruins is heartbreaking and forces the viewer to reflect upon the emotional history of the building and the city that surrounds it. Back-to-school season is taking on new meaning in St. Louis as "Empty Halls, Silent Classrooms" photography exhibit opens one week before school starts. This powerful exhibit represents a physical manifestation of something that has gone horribly wrong. The strange sense of stillness in "Empty Halls, Silent Classrooms" offers compelling shapes in broken glass and unexpected intersections of shadow and light.

St. Louis Public Schools Building Revitalization Collaborative have offered many of these school properties for sale. The concept of converting buildings that were once liabilities into market-rate properties has been successful. Many of the unique scholastic shells designed by W.B. Ittner with their arched windows, high ceilings and high quality brick masonry are now affordable living spaces.

“Empty Halls, Silent Classrooms” includes works by Jackie Johnson, Talia Long ,Amy Huslage, Ben Banet , Dave Adams, Ann Chartrand, Ann Aurbach, Joel Jablonski, Elly Smith, Mark Abeln and Jane Linders.

The original Craft Mafia was started by a group of crafty business owners in Austin, TX. They networked and shared resources amongst themselves and in doing so helped their own ventures grow and spread crafty goodness throughout the Austin area. Other cities soon wished to join and have been popping up around the world ever since. We work locally here in St. Louis to promote the indie craft scene and grow our businesses.

Wealthy St. Louis citizens spent large amounts of money hiring top architects to build and design their final resting places in hopes o f producing eternal shrines to themselves.

The major focal point of a mausoleum is the door that serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose as well as an obvious partition symbolizing the transition from one realm to the next.

These mausoleums are the final resting place of St. Louis' notable citizens, such as August Busch, Tennessee Williams and Dred Scot, just to name a few. Sadly, thieves looking for quick cash from scrap metal are stealing some of the doors. I was lucky enough to spend a glorious spring day capturing these crypt doors.

Mississippi River Photo Shoot Out

March 13th, 2016

Mississippi River Photo Shoot Out

I am pleased to announce that two of my photos have been selected from over 500 entries for the Mississippi River Photo Shoot Out. The first image is of a world war two minesweeper, the USS Inaugural, which was sent downstream in the flood of '93. A recent drought brought low water levels to the river and the sunken boat was revealed. I scrambled down an embankment just south of the Arch to capture this image. I feel it represents a snap shot of the Mississippi river with industry, barge traffic and pollution.

The 2nd image I captured with my infrared camera at Chester bridge which spans the Mississippi river. Fun fact: Chester, Illinois is the home of Popeye.

An exhibition to bring together a collection of outstanding contemporary photographs interpreting, documenting, and celebrating the Mississippi River and life along the Mississippi. Photographs submitted for the juried exhibit were taken anywhere along the river from its Minnesota headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico. Photographs include sights and scenes depicting riverscapes, recreation, commerce, wildlife, weather conditions, nature and natural phenomena.

"Our goal is to assemble a large body of photography, 100 to 125 photographs, that are as rich and diverse as the Mississippi River itself."

The exhibition is a collaborative effort between the Corps of Engineer’s National Great Rivers Museum, Jacoby Arts Center in Alton, IL, and the Great Rivers Photo ShootOut LTD. The photography will be exhibied at Jacoby Arts Center, National Great Rivers Museum and the Audubon Center in the Riverlands near Alton, Illinois. After the initial exhibition the photographs will become a traveling exhibition seen at numerous locations along the Mississippi River.

I received my Jan/Feb 2016 copy of Eating Well magazine today and was very happy to see my black and white photo of the Eat Rite diner published in the magazine. The article titled "On the Chili Trail" by Robb Walsh cruises down Route 66 in search of America's favorite comfort food, chili. Robb hunts down some of the historic chili joints including St. Louis own O.T. Hodge Chile Parlor and the venerable Eat-Rite diner, home of the gut busting, artery clogging "slinger." Eating Well magazine printed a slimmed down version of the ST. Louis slinger, substituting ground turkey for beef. I feel honored to have my photo of the original greasy spoon grace the pages of this fine magazine.

My Old School

July 8th, 2015

My Old School

St. Louis is known for many things, "Brick City" , "Mound City" and it's famous lack of regard for preservation. I saw a lot of brick this spring , as well as mounds of debris as I spent the spring touring and photographing abandoned St. Louis City Schools. The St. Louis Public School district scheduled public open house of over 30 closed schools that had fallen into disrepair in the hopes that the schools could be redeveloped and re-purposed. The STL Public Schools Building Revitalization Collaborative hosted a series of tours open to intrepid visitors . It was sad to see lovely, turn of the century buildings abandoned and neglected. Century old schools were looted, vandalized and many have extensive water damage. Thieves removed copper wiring and the freeze thaw cycle left lots of peeling paint. These 100 year old buildings contiue to fall into disrepair and attract crime into the area.

Beautiful , brick buildings, many by architect William Ittner suffered from benign neglect. It was a challenge to photograph these schools as all were without electricity so I had a lot of low light conditions. Dodging downed ceilings, soggy insulation, dead animals, glass shards and mold, I spent a glorious spring photographing the beautiful chaos of cracked walls and peeling paint. Wearing long sleeves, long pants and sturdy shoes to protect me from scratches, broken boards and rusty nails, I captured the broken windows, graffiti and school artifacts left by the former inhabitants. As I toured the schools I heard lots of comments and ideas on how to revitalize these shuttered schools. Artist spaces, low income housing, apartments and office spaces were some of the ideas tossed around. Some of the buildings are selling for as little as $100,000 and others for over $2 million. I hope some of the irreplaceable architecture of these shuttered schools can be saved.

In Black and White

March 17th, 2015

In Black and White

I am delighted to be included in the upcoming "In Black and White" at Edwardsville Arts Center. I'll be exhibiting some of my infrared images.

May 15 - June 19 In Black and White

In Black and White explores art that embraces the absence of color. Black and white become a unifying force that binds seemingly incompatible identities. Eight artists working in photography, sculpture, and drawing purposely explore how black, white, and gray can be intentional as a conceptual framework. In an era of limitless chromatic variations via digital technology, these respected artists from our region present works that are “old school” in the analogue nature of their processes but are decidedly contemporary in creative thought. From 19th century photographic printing processes to drawings that build off of intaglio printmaking and hand-stitched embroidery, In Black and White will challenge viewers to consider the powers of limits.

Here is the list of artists:

Erica Popp (alternative process photography)

Mark Douglas (photographer and professor at Fontbonne)
·

Stan Strembicki (photographer and professor at Wash U)
·

Jane Linders (alternative process photography)
·

Christopher Day (large scale drawings on panel)
·

Christine Holtz (conceptual textile/installation artist…MFA alum SIUE)
·

Joanna Hoge (mixed media over intaglio)

Make art from trash?

Make art from trash?

I love a good project you can make utilizing items you would normally throw away. It's not only a great way to recycle and be green but an excellent source for free crafting supplies.

My husband makes luminaries out of discarded coffee cans. They are up cycled and solar lit for a double environmental win. His luminaries strike a perfect balance of industrial design and zen aesthetics. The soft glow creates enchanting shadows that enhance any room.

A bucket of ice cold beer, BBQ and friends sprawled out in deck chairs while the kids catch fireflies. Seems like a perfect summer evening and you can make it last longer by adding lighting to your deck or patio. Sherwood's luminaries will add warmth and charm to patio and deck dining. these torch cut , one of a kind luminaries are made from up-cycled coffee cans and caste enchanting patterns of light. They look best when grouped together for a dramatic effect. Whether lit by candle or top lit with solar lights (lights not included) these environmentally friendly luminaries will add a touch of mystery to your space.

All luminaries are clear coated with enamel to extend outdoor use.

St Louis artists band together in wake of recent vandalism

December 4th, 2014

St. Louis has taken a beating lately, and in the wake of recent riots and vandalism , I would like to share this story of hope.

Local St. Louis Craft Mafia member, Autumn Wiggins opened a store called The UpCycle Exchange in St. Louis. The UpCycle exchange offers St. Louis' creative community craft and art supplies at a Pay-as-you-wish pricing. After the Michael Brown ruling in Ferguson, a peaceful demonstration near The UpCycle Exchange went awry and the windows of her building were broken out.

The next morning , an online "kickstarter-type" campaign was started to help The Upcycle Exchange pay for new windows. Within 4 fours over $2,000 was raised to help this small, independent business replace her broken windows. Artists stick together!

St. Louis has gotten a lot of bad press lately, but having lived in this community for over 50 years, I can tell you that this city and residents are an amazing group of people. I feel honored to be part of this city.

Photo Flood St. Louis, a surge of images along the banks of the Big Muddy

November 22nd, 2014

Photo Flood St. Louis, a surge of images along the banks of the Big Muddy

I joined Photo Flood St. Louis in the fall of 2014. This organization strives to improve the perception of St. Louis by spending weekends photographing specific neighborhoods and events in the St. Louis area. The members of this group are both amateur and professional photographers and are organized by the intrepid Jason Gray. Before each flood of photographers hit an area, a map is drawn and the photographers are confined to capture images within the map area. After each event, jurors select the best images and the winners are posted online.

My first photo flood was of The Trestle in North St. Louis. The Trestle is an old train trestle which spans highway 70 and will eventually be converted to an urban park. You may recall that New York City converted a train trestle to a park with much success. Hopefully St. Louis' trestle will be just as grand! The Great Rivers Greenway will connect The Trestle with the bike trail that runs along the Mississippi River from the Chain of Rocks bridge to the Arch. I decided to break out my infrared camera for this adventure. And although I didn't have the dramatic puffy cloud skies that make infrared images so interesting, I did manage to squeeze off a few good shots. It was so interesting to see St. Louis from this elevated level.

Looking forward to many more Photo Floods in this amazing city-St. Louis.

The City at 250 A celebration of St. Louis in Photographs

September 5th, 2014

The City at 250 A celebration of St. Louis in Photographs

The Sheldon Art Gallery held a city wide photo contest that began in 2013 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of St. Louis. Over 500 entries were submitted and juror Olivia Lahs-Gonzales whittled the final exhibit to 100 photographs of events, architecture, people and neighborhoods of St. Louis. I was lucky to win 1st prizes in two categories: architecture and places as well as neighborhoods and events.

I am so excited to exhibit my work with fellow photographers in St. Louis who I have admired for years. My longtime art crush, Jeff Sass, printed a gorgeous photo of the inside of local shop on Cherokee Street, using a 100 yr old camera, using 90 year old paper and caffenol ( an odd mixture of instant coffee, vitamin C and fixer to develop the print right there in his bathtub!). Greg Kluempers used HDR to capture a quirky pizzeria on the Hill that looks almost like a painting. Hilary Hitchcock presented a dreamy Polaroid transfer of the Missouri Botanical Garden. There's so many great photos in this exhibit. If you don't have time to visit the gallery, you can purchase the book "The City at 250".

I am sure that my love affair with St. Louis , with it's rich history, amazing brick buildings, quirky people, and vibrant art scene will continue to inspire me and my fellow photographers.

Happy Birthday St. Louis!

Meet the photographers who contributed to the book at Barnes and Nobel on October 25, 2015. They will be on hand to sign your book. Light refreshments and gallery director Olivia Lahs-Gonzales will give a short introduction to the slide show of the top 100 images.

Beer and Art at ART OUTSIDE

I applied for Schlafly's ART OUTSIDE , but didn't get in. Photography is very competitive at art fairs. That doesn't mean I won't be attending Art Outside Sept 5, 6 and 7th at Schlafly in Maplewood, MO. My husband, Sherwood Linders, got in the show and I will be helping him out with his booth and sipping yummy pumpkin beer while listening to Miss Jubilee. What a fabulous way to wind down the summer.

Sherwood makes luminaries out of torch cut metal cans. Each luminary is hand cut and designed by Sherwood. He uses upcycled coffee cans and soup cans, which are solar lit for a double environmental win.

Selfie STL

Selfie STL

Several months ago, Philip Hitchcock asked me to participate in the upcoming Selfie STL exhibit at PHD gallery in June 2014. I have never taken a selfie before but thought I would give it a try. Since I always find myself taking photos in cemeteries a lot, it seemed appropriate to do my selfie at my favorite St. Louis cemetery. While I was walking around the cemetery trying to find the best spot, I noticed a headstone that read "Hitchcock" in giant letters. I thought it would be fun to take my selfie in front of the tombstone and kinda freak out Philip. Then I thought that might not be a good idea. What if by some freak accident Philip dies (yeah I know that sounds crazy), I would always feel that I was somehow responsible for drawing death to Philip. So I picked a different spot in the cemetery.

Selfie STL
(courtesy of PHD gallery)

PHD Gallery invited 50 St. Louisans to take part in “SELFIE STL,” the exhibit that promises to raise the selfie to new artistic heights, or at least to launch an exploration into what human motivations are behind our desire to be seen and recognized now. Nevermind waiting for a notable achievement to be recognized, the fact that we exist is reason enough. The gallery invited various members of the local art set to participate, including artists, arts administrators, photographers, academics, educators, gallerists, journalists, members of the dance and theater community, politicians, and drag queens.

The participants were given free reign on the content of their pictures, the only requirement being that the picture fit the definition of a selfie. No restrictions were placed on “nudity, common sense, good taste, or duck face,” though participants were reminded their images would be put on public display.

In his New York Magazine piece, Saltz also contends that selfies have actually changed aspects of social interaction, self-awareness, body language, privacy and humor. Moreover, they have altered, temporality, irony and public behavior. Saltz also forwards the notion that selfies having their own structural autonomy is a very big deal for art.

“Selfie STL” opens at PHD Gallery June 7 – July 19, with a free public reception on Saturday, June 7, from 7-10pm. For more information, visit the PHD Gallery website.

The ReFind Room

I am delighted to exhibit with one of St. Louis' most talented mixed media artist, Mary Nasser at The ReFind Room. I first saw Mary's work at The Vino Gallery in the Central West End in St. Louis and was intrigued. St. Louis is a big-small town and I kept running into Mary here and there. Little did I know 2 years later, we would be sharing the same walls at The ReFind room. I couldn't be happier and am honored to be in the same room with such a prestigious artist.

Two award winning St. Louis artists inspired by nature, landscapes and geology, bring their unique visions to The Refind Room March 21, 2014 from 6 to 8pm. Join Mary Nasser and Jane Linders for cocktails and light refreshments while they discuss their work. Exhibit runs March 21 through April 21.

The Faces Project wins Critical Mass Stimulus Money

So excited that The Faces Project won the Creative Stimulus Project grant sponsored by Critical Mass for the visual Arts. The St. Louis art community is so supportive of the artists in this region. It is an honor to be part of this amazing community.

Want to know more about The Faces Project?

WHAT IS IT?
The Faces project was started by artist, Christine Ilewski. She began painting portraits of children who have died from victims of gun violence in memory of Lorenzo Rosebaugh. It is her hope that by putting a face to these victims, we can raise awareness about gun violence in the USA.

HOW CAN I HELP?
You will be mailed a photo of a child who has died as a result of gun violence and will be asked to make two representational portraits of that child. The first portrait ( a representational head and shoulders, size 9" x 11") goes to the family as a gift.

When you email Chris a copy of your portrait, she will place a copy of your portrait on a handkerchief and this image will be used for our traveling exhibit.

CAN I USE ANY MEDIUM?
The portrait given to the family should be 2dimensional, representational, head and shoulders, 9"x11" in the media of your choice (watercolor, acrylic, oil, pencil, pastel)

But your interpretation Face (made from a copy of your original portrait) can be a sketch, painting, cross stitch or sculpted image of the child. We are interested in a representational portrait (no abstracts please!) For consistency in future exhibits, we are asking that all Faces paintings , sketches and fiber arts be 9" x 11". Sculptures should be life size for consistency with the others.

CAN I KEEP THE PORTRAIT?
No. You will be donating your original portrait to the victim's family.
And the 2nd portrait, Face interpretation will join the traveling exhibition.

CAN I KEEP THE PHOTO?
No. We ask that you return the photo , along with your finished portrait to the family.

HOW LONG CAN I KEEP THE PHOTO AND WORK ON THE PORTRAIT?
We ask that you paint/sketch/sculpt the portrait and Face within one month from receiving the photo of the victim.

WHERE DO I SEND THE FINISHED PORTRAIT and Face interpretation?
On the back of the photo that will be sent to you, you will find the name and address of the victim's family. We ask that you mail the finished portrait to the addy on the back of the photo.

Convo me for my mailing address..

Please email a .jpg file of your finished portrait to cilewski@juno.com for documentation.

WILL I BE REIMBURSED FOR PAINT, CANVAS, ART SUPPLIES AND POSTAGE COST?
Sorry, but we currently don't have the funding for art supplies and postage costs, but we're working on getting funding. We appreciate you taking the time, money and talent to do the portrait for the family and adding to the traveling FACES project. Just know that you are doing something to relieve the suffering of the victim's family as well as helping to raise gun violence awareness.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PORTRAIT/Face?
We will send your original portrait to the victim's family. Then your portrait interpretation Face may be exhibited in a gallery as we intend to take this project nationally. We are currently expanding the project to other cities.

DO I HAVE TO FRAME the PORTRAIT?
No you are not required to frame your portrait, unless you want to. That would be nice. I'm sure the victim's family would appreciate it.

CAN I MEET THE Victim's FAMILY?
Possibly. We plan on having more exhibits of The Faces Project. We invite the artist and the victim's families to the openings. Please include a business card or your contact information along with your portrait. We will pass your contact information on the victim's family if you wish.

I KNOW SOMEONE WHO'S CHILD WAS A VICTIM OF GUN VIOLENCE. WHO DO I CONTACT TO HAVE THEIR PORTRAIT DONE?
Please have the victim's family contact Christine Ilewski at cilewski@juno.com or Jane Linders at janelinders@sbcglobal.net. We'll match them up with an artist. We would love it if you helped spread the word. All families will be asked to sign a release form that allows us to publicly display the images of their child. No commercial profit will be made from the display. We are asking that all children be under the age of 20 and that the families send a CLEAR photo of their loved one. Blurry images will not be accepted.

CAN I SELL MY PORTRAIT?
No. You will be donating your portrait to the victims family. We are strictly enforcing that no profit is to be made from the sale of these portraits.

CAN I POST MY PORTRAIT ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
Yes. Feel free to tweet, facebook, etc the portrait you made. This will help increase public awareness regarding gun violence in this country.

We are always looking for vintage handkerchiefs for our portraits. If you would like to donate some, please contact Jane Linders at JaneLinders@sbcglobal.net

Slow Food Movement

Slow Food Movement

It seems appropriate to donate The Eat Rite Diner photos to Art of Food, a fundraiser to benefit Slow Food St. Louis.

The 7th Annual Art of Food will take place at Koken Art Factory on Saturday, September 22, from 6 to 10 pm. The event, sponsored by Feast Magazine and Schlafly Beer, will include a silent auction featuring art from approximately 20 - 30 artists and various food stations featuring twenty of St. Louis's top chefs, who will create hors d'ouvres from the products of local purveyors. The theme is all things food, and the event draws St. Louis foodies and art fans alike. There is always a tremendous turn out for the event as people love to eat. St. Louis is a great foodie town!

Out of my comfort zone, photography to abstract art

Out of my comfort zone, photography to abstract art

I am a photographer, but have always wanted to try painting. When I see abstract paintings, I always think, "hmmmm.....I bet I could do that!". Turns out that it's not at easy as it looks. I think that I will stick to photography.

My first abstract was a triptych for my daughter, who rode her bike 1100 miles this summer from Columbia, MO to New Orleans. She picked out the colors for the painting. Let the good times roll!

Throw a DART. how do you see your city?

August 14th, 2012

Throw a DART. how do you see your city?

DART St. Louis is a participatory photography challenge that started with one basic premise - that beauty can be found anywhere by those who seek it. On September 25, 2012 from 6 to 9pm at 2745 Locust hundreds of creative St. Louisans will throw darts a a giant map of the St. Louis City. The following month, participants will visit the area where their dart landed and make a photograph. The resulting collection of photographs show a snapshot of St. Louis as it is today, one random block at t time. .

A camera is a powerful tool that gives the photographer a reason to explore topics and places that are unknown. By the mere act of photographing, things that were unknown become captured, understood, and made personal. By experiencing new areas and meeting new St. Louisans, we see more clearly the hope and promise of our own neighborhoods and our own neighbors. This is all St. Louis, and it’s ours.

The camera makes everyone a tourist in other people’s reality, and eventually in one’s own.

Selling art from your coat?

Local St. Louis artist Jennifer Weigel (http://jenniferweigelart.com/) went "rouge" this year at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis 7th annual Open Studio Tour. Here's a pic of her visiting the Regional Arts Commission on Delmar. Last year her "studio" was in her car. She stuffed her car full of art and went from studio to studio selling art right out of her car! This year she was on foot and pedaling her art from her coat. With temps 95 plus in St. Louis, Jennefer Weigel was a hot ticket.

My Vintage Addiction

I dropped off some of my retro funky photo cards at an adorable new shop in Belleville, Illinois called My Vintage Addiction. http://myvintageaddiction.com/ This fun store was packed full of mid century modern furniture and unusual vintage finds. I was drooling over the old Rand maps hanging from the walls and spied a retro lamp tucked away in the corner that would look perfect in my bedroom. I strolled along Main Street stopping in shops along the way. Ate some yummy blood orange sorbet, got a 10 minute chair massage, ate some blood orange gelato, shopped at a leather goods store bought some hand made soap all within 2 blocks! How have I lived so close to Belleville for so long and never visited?

I trade art for tax prep with Tarik Benchabane

March 3rd, 2012

I trade art for tax prep with Tarik Benchabane

I am useless with accounting, money and numbers. I find the world of finance profoundly boring and every year I cringe as April 15 approaches and I have to prepare my taxes. This year my taxes were going to be especially difficult as I sold some stock and had to figure out the cost basis. I also had medical bills to take into account, along with the mortgage and a bunch of other stuff that would make my taxes more difficult. Then I met Tarik Benchabane at Art in the Park art fair in St. Louis Hills. He seemed interested in my photography, but was short on funds. We struck up a conversation about a lot of different topics and I discovered that he recently graduated with a finance degree. He wanted one of my photos but didn't have the money and I needed help with my taxes, so I traded art for tax preparation. For the first time in my life, my taxes are finished before April 15 and Tarik Benchabane has the perfect photo for his new apartment. Win-win.

The Bathroom Artist

February 19th, 2012

The Bathroom Artist

I sell my photos at art fairs around the St. Louis area. Whenever I sell a photo, I always ask the buyer where they intend to hang the photo and 99% of the time they say that the photo will be hung in their bathroom. I became know locally as "the bathroom" artist.

Recently , I traded a photo I captured at the Lemp Brewery for home brewed beer. The customer sent me an appreciation photo as he hung the photo as an entrance to his "beer cave." Maybe this is just what I needed to get upgraded from the bathroom to the basement!

I traded this photo for home brewed beer

February 5th, 2012

A well known home brewer from Michigan contacted me from Etsy about purchasing this photo for his brewing kitchen. I suggested trading the photo for some home brew and he accepted. I'm looking forward to getting delicious pale ales, mead, barley wine, and lambics instead of money. I kind of like this idea of trade instead of money.

Dad and Beer

June 8th, 2011

Dad and Beer

Your dad likes to drink beer doesn't he? I've got the perfect image to give him for Father's day. I captured this image using HDR technique. I took 5 photos, two underexposed and two over exposed and merged them together to create an image with a high dynamic range. This image was captured at historical Lemp Brewery in St. Louis, MO. I had so much fun exploring this quirky beer brewing complex with my camera.

The Lemp brewery is built upon a complex of natural caves which were once used for making beer by early German brewers. Underground caves are naturally cool, which was especially attractive to brewers before refrigeration was invented. Several breweries were built atop these natural caves, which were altered to suit their purposes. Stone arches and brick ceilings prevented water seepage and uneven cave floors were paved with brick. In addition to being used for the storage and lagering of beer, such naturally cool places were sometimes employed as beer gardens, places for entertainment.

The first brew house was constructed in 1865. When it was constructed by the Lemp Family, the Lemp Mansion, included an underground tunnel through the natural cave system leading to the Lemp Brewery. The Lemp Family would use this tunnel to go to work. The Lemp Brewery eventually became Falstaff Brewing Company. The Lemp family had much turmoil in their lives. Several Lemp members committed suicide and the Lemp Mansion and the brewery are said to be haunted.

Ghosts AND beer? It's a good combo.

At Home St. Louis supports local artists

Just wanted to give a shout out to Christy Marshall, the editor of St. Louis AT HOME magazine for mentioning me in this week's Tips and Tricks At Home. I appreciate your support!

Here's the mention:

Tips & TricksEditor's Pick: SnapLately I have been noticing more and more great photographs on the walls of the houses I scout. Of course, many of them are of famous people and probably came with four- to six-figure price tags. But then again, there is talent in this town who can shoot a gorgeous shot. Case in point: St. Louis’ own Jane Linders (freewebs.com/janelinders, etsy.com/shop/jalinde). Her shot of the Eat Rite diner was featured last month on the Smithsonian channel. What she calls her “current passion” is manipulating Polaroids. The photos are unique and gorgeous—and affordable (as in ranging from $29.99 to $59.99 for an unmated 8- by 10-inch print).

Blue InnerView

March 9th, 2011

I am super excited about my upcoming solo exhibitBlue InnerView: Cyanotype Photographs .

- Artist\'s reception April 8, 2011, 6-9PM during the Maplewood Harp Attack Artswalk

] Location: S. Carmody Photography, 2707 Sutton Blvd. Maplewood MO 63143

- Info: 314-401-8089; info@carmodyphoto.com

] Free event, open to the public

- Show runs through May 31, 2011

S. Carmody Photography presents Blue InnerView, cyanotype photographs by St. Louis-based photographer, Jane Linders. Linders\' images consist of architectural elements which are then printed onto pages of a 1939 Sheet Metal Handbook (acquired on a recent dumpster diving expedition).

Regarded as master at alternative photographic techniques such a Polaroid transfers and Holga, Linders this time uses cyanotype as the preferred medium. Cyanotypes, also called \"sun prints,\" are one of the oldest photographic printing processes, dating back to 1842. This inexpensive, simple and permanent process was used for copying architectural plans before the copy machine was invented, hence the name gblue print.h By printing Cyanotypes on up-cycled, vintage handbook pages, Linders explores the connection and blurs the barrier between science, architecture and art.

Photos include images of local St. Louis architecture (Compton Hill Water Tower), France (Eiffel Tower) and many destinations in-between. Linders enjoys the vivid blue color, the simplicity, the \"hands-on\" aspect of the cyanotype process as well as the unique texture and character of the papers it is printed on. Nonetheless, she regards the technique as a tool, not a goal.

Linders is an award-winning photographer whose prints appear in numerous national and international collections. Her work has exhibited in venues from her St. Louis hometown to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. On March 6, 2011 at 10AM her image of St. Louis\' EAT RITE Diner will be featured on the Smithsonian Spotlight: Picture Perfect on the Smithsonian Channel. The show will be re-aired at 8PM on March 8, 2011. For more information visit this link: http://www.smithsonianchannel.com/site/sn/show.do?episode=137791

The opening reception coincides with the Maplewood ArtsWalk which will feature art and live harpists.

Art-E-Zine features Fine Art America artist

Today was a good day. I sold something on FAA today AND my cyanotypes are featured on Art-E-Zine. Here's the link: http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/sunprint.html

Art-E-Zine did a fantastic job of the layout and design.

The Battered Suitcase

January 2nd, 2011

The Battered Suitcase

I just received my copy of The Battered Suitcase Winter 2010 by Vagabondage Press with an HDR shot I took on the cover. I was playing around with HDR one summer day in 2010 and noticed the gorgeous , mid west sky. I lugged a recently acquired vintage suitcase to Thies Farm in Maryland Heights, MO and started shooting. Who knew the image would end up on the cover of a magazine? I was as surprised as anyone. I hope 2011 is as kind to me artistically as 2010 was!

Sales are rocking on ETSY

December 18th, 2010

I joined Etsy on January 1, 2010 and have sold something every month. The months of November and December have been lucrative on Etsy as folks are buying Christmas presents. I think the key to success on any online sales is promotion by the artist/crafter. That being said, I can't say that I really put much effort into promoting my Etsy shop. My photos just sort of sold on their own. I tweeted and facebooked here and there and put my etsy web address on business cards. http://www.etsy.com/shop/jalinde

I devoted the same amount of promotion time to my Etsy shop as I did to my Fine Art America "store". So why only one sale on FAA? I don't know the answer to that. Maybe my photos aren't considered "Fine Art", but are more craft like?

As I reflect on my art sales for 2010, I sell the most art when I am face to face with my clients at art fairs or galleries. Lets face it, people who buy art want to meet the artists and have a chat and I certainly like to talk.

I hope 2011 is as kind to me as 2010 was.

Cheerio!

How To buy Local Art Online Right Now

December 7th, 2010

I am one of the 100 artists exhibiting at a new art show. We're exhibiting over 1,000 art works, all through December. And you can look at all the art anytime, day or night, seven days a week!

It's St. Louis' first interactive online art show at MySLART.org (SLART stands for St. Louis ART)

Please visit MySLART.org and read the "How To Buy Local Art Online Right Now" information on the home page. Right next to that, you can view one work by each of the 100 artists in an interactive slide show. Then just click on any artist slide you like and it takes you to that artist's home page with contact information and more of their art work. It's very simple and easy to use.

Our interactive holiday art show is a great place to shop for unique gifts. Original fine art works are available all through December at prices ranging from $14 to $450. And because you deal with the artists direct (no gallery commissions) sometimes you can make your best offers and save some money on purchases. Plus, since all the artists are local artists, you can usually pick up your art work purchases at their studios.

Their are 1,132 fine art works on sale all through December. Available fine art works include paintings, photography, sculpture, jewelry, prints, ceramics and fiber art.

Please visit http://MySLART.org often during the month of December. You'll find it very easy to quickly look at a lot of art and find exactly what you like. And it's a great way to get involved with (and support) our local artists.

Thanks,
Jane

Ste Genevieve will be having an art walk on October 22, 2010 from 6 to 9pm.

As you walk along, from studio to gallery during the Art Walk, you may notice an artist painting a sunset, a guitarist playing for tips or just the ambiance of a by-gone day. Ste Genevieve boasts more examples of colonial French buildings than anywhere else in the country. Old brick and stone buildings from later German settlers are also preserved here.

Ste Genevieve, Missouri, has had a long history with art going back to the Ste. Genevieve Art Colony, established in the early 1930's. Both Thomas Hart Benton and Joe Jones, along with other notable artists, were faculty in it's Summer School of Art. Over a century earlier, John James Audubon moved here and worked in town and the surrounding area for a short period. Before that, Native Americans painted on cave walls in this county. Ste Genevieve's artists of today continue a very, very long tradition.

Artica 2010

October 10th, 2010

Artica 2010

I just can't seem to keep away from things that go up in flames.

Last night I attended Artica, located just north of the famous St. Louis Arch. With a small cooler of beer in hand, my husband and I trudgerd up a dark dirt mound using the flame throwers as our visual guide. There was a decent crowd gathered around the beautiful wooden angel. Someone was putting on a decent laser show on the abandonded buildings behind the statue. Folks were waiting patiently for the giant wooden structure to burn.

The fire marshal was supposed to arrive between 8 and 9pm ,but he never showed up, so they torched the angel. It was a massive fire and almost melted my camera. As I was leaving Artica, I saw 4 firetrucks speeding towards Artica. Ooops. I suspect someone is going to get in trouble for the giant fire.

I plan on returning to Artica again today, to see what artsy madness ensues. Join me!

Returned from Burningman

September 19th, 2010

Returned from Burningman

As the saying goes, trying to describe Burningman festival to someone who has never been there is like trying to describe the color Red to a blind person. If you've attended the festival before, no explanation is necessary. If you have never been to Burningman , no explanation is possible.

Celebrities that attended Burningman 2010 are the woman who played Maryann on Gilligan's Island and David Bowie. I'm sure there are many more, but those are the two most recent rumors.

I am still shaking the playa dust out of all my clothes, tents, shoes, etc. That stuff creeps into everything. I think it creeped into my camera and wrecked it, because I'm getting odd lookin purple orbs in my photos now and there's a black round smudge on the left side of all of my photos now. ~sigh~ . I don't care, it was worth it.

and filmed a story. Local and regional television and newspapers have
written countless stories. Other ArtSpace-like communities have
spawned all over the country.

©\ Location: S. Carmody Photography, 2707 Sutton Blvd. Maplewood MO

©\ Show runs until March 31, 2010
Kick off ValentineˇŻs weekend by joining us for the ˇ°Heart of the Townˇ± opening
reception featuring alternative process photography works by artist Jane Linders.
Linders travels outside the wake of the digital era by using more hands on
traditional photographic processes such as Polaroid transfers and cyanotypes.
The intrinsic qualities of these mediums lend themselves to spontaneous
exploration, allowing Linders to rework the images using her watercolors, colored
pencils, and intuition. Subject matter ranges from the oddities of roadside
Americana and the eerie beauty of cemeteries to x-rayed bones reconstructed
into visually intriguing alien still lives. LindersˇŻ images possess a painterly quality
rich with mood and nuance absent from contemporary processes.
Jane Linders is an award-winning photographer whose prints appear in
numerous national and international collections. Linders has exhibited her work
everywhere from her hometown of St. Louis, Missouri to the Smithsonian
Museum in Washington D.C. She is a tireless image-maker, whose photos can
be seen in galleries, books, and magazines.

Preserving the Chemical Photography Era The Getty Institute

April 5th, 2009

Preserving the Chemical Photography Era The Getty Institute

About 2 months ago I was contacted by The Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles, CA to be part of the Getty Institutes’ Preserving the Chemical Photography Era Project. They asked me to send them a sample of one of my cyanotype images as well as a coated piece of watercolor paper for them to analyze. I also sent them my lab notebook detailing what chemicals I used, what kind of paper, rinse techniques, etc. Since my “day job” is working in a chemical laboratory testing pharmaceuticals , this detailed documentation came very easily to me. The goal of the Getty Conservation Institute is to help future photograph conservators, photography historians, photography collections and museum curators and provide them with well characterized collection of alternative photographic processes and process variants. By adding to their collection of alternative processes it will aid in the development of a scientifically based methodology for the identification of these alternative processes. For more information about the project or if you would like to contribute, go to http://www.getty.edu/conservation. The image I sent them was a cyanotype of the FRANKENSTIEN grave at a local St. Louis cemetery.

For all you non-science readers, I suggest you stop reading this blog now. If your eyes haven’t already glazed over from boredom, they will from this point on. If you want to get your chemical geek-on, continue reading.

The cyanotype process is over 150 years old and was invented by John Herschel in 1842. It was the first successful non-silver photographic printing process. It was cheap and simple way to copy plans. The word “blueprint” is used in everyday language long after photocopies became a more economical way to copy images.

A solution of Ammonium Iron (III) citrate is mixed with Potassium Ferricyanide and coated on watercolor paper and left to dry. A negative is placed over the coated paper and exposed to UV light. Under UV light the Fe III gets reduced to Fe II and creates a permanent image in the paper. The image is washed and rinsed in a weak solution of HCl and dried. (Non science types……….why are still reading this? Why don’t you play tennis with a friend, or take walk? Will you deny that you just read this sentence? How about this one?)

My cyanotype was first analyzed using a nondestructive method of chemical analysis (XRF-X-ray fluorescence spectrometry). The microscopic structure of the image layer was observed using a Leica S6D zoom digital stero-microscope. They found Iron, Calcium (paper filler) and Strontium (calcium compound impurity).

The next analysis was by FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). They found a major spectral band at –3300 cm (absorbed and residual water), , -2887 cm (C-H bond, organic materials) , 2067 cm (C=N bond typical for the blue complex dye from the cyanotype process) and –1400-850 cm spectral envelope from cellulose.

Maybe they didn’t want to destroy the sample I sent them and preserve it for future generations, but I thought they would analyze my photo by Atomic Absorption and figure out how much Fe was in there. The Getty Institue even sent me copies of the FTIR and XRF scan. I was amazed at how well documented and detailed the report was and am happy to contribute to such an ambitious project.

How the work is judged: The Naughti Gras Show tries to be edgier, and
more fun than what one might expect from an erotic art exhibition.
Other than legal age requirements, nothing is censored, nothing too
filthy or too subtle. All art is considered, from the high, to the
low, from the biggest names, to the first timers. We have seen erotic
work from expressionists, abstracts, commercial artists,
photographers, and more. Comic and pin-up art has as much chance as a
realistically rendered fine-art piece. We want to be amazed, excited,
astounded, humored or aghast, we love it all.

The Naughti Gras Show is juried by the organizers along with a few
experts we respect. Art ranges from classic museum quality
craftsmanship, to crude at-tempts at expressionism. The decision all
boils down to, do we like it? Our main criteria are, "Is it erotic?"
closely followed by "Is it good?" This covers a huge spectrum, as
"erotic" can cover many areas. We'll admit, some art goes way over the
edge, if you can shock us; you will most likely end up on the wall.

Alright then, Let's Get Naughti!

Cyanotype

April 28th, 2008

Cyanotype
