St. Louis is known for many things, "Brick City" , "Mound City" and it's famous lack of regard for preservation. In the spring of 2015, the St. Louis Public School district scheduled public open house of over 30 closed schools that had fallen into disrepair in the hopes that the schools could be redeveloped and re-purposed. The STL Public Schools Building Revitalization Collaborative allowed intrepid visitors to tour the schools. It was sad to see lovely, turn of the century buildings abandoned and neglected. Century old schools were looted, vandalized and many have extensive water damage. Thieves removed copper wiring and the freeze thaw cycle left lots of peeling paint.
Beautiful , brick buildings, many by architect William Ittner suffered from benign neglect. The roofs leaked, causing rafters and joist to rot. My current passion is an alternative photographic process called Polaroid transfers. Each transfer is hand-made by the photographer using specific materials and equipment to achieve a desired effect. A transparency is projected on to professional Polaroid print film and as development begins, the print and chemicals are prematurely separated. The image is transferred on to dampened watercolor paper for a unique image which has a dated, artistic photo-painting appearance. Exposure, pressure, time, paper and other variables make each print an original mono-print.
