Description
In 1923 the O'Shaughnessy Dam was built to hold back the Toulume River creating the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. This dam flooded the entire valley and the water is used to service the San Fransisco Bay area. Naturalist , John Muir , battled the flooding of this area located in Yosemite National Park. The controversy continues today and the Sierra Club hopes to drain the reservoir and return the area to it's natural state. It's a lovely hike around the reservoir surrounded by the colorful red/orange bark of the manzanita and a lot less crowed than Yosemite Valley. It was said that the flooding of this magnificent valley broke John Muir's heart and he died shortly thereafter.
